Charging an electric car at home, in a family house
A home electric car charger has many advantages. On the one hand, it is much more convenient because we are not bound by time, we do not have to wait for someone else to start charging. On the other hand, it is also safer, since no one else can touch the car while charging. By the way, this is the most cost-effective solution for electric car charging: four times cheaper than street charging
To reap the benefits, choosing a car charger that is compatible with your car and meets your needs is vital. It is therefore important to have the necessary information before purchasing a home electric car wall charger.

What do you need to know about the home electric car wall charger?
Should I choose a wall charger or plug-in charging?
The charger that can be connected to the standard socket provided with electric cars typically supplies 10A current, i.e. its output is 2.3 kW. With this performance, an average electric car can be charged in 20 hours.
It is important to note that household sockets are not designed for the continuous, high load that a car charger represents.
On the other hand, the power of a properly selected and installed wall charger , which is connected to the electrical network, is usually 11 kW. With this performance, the average charging time is reduced to 4 hours.
There are also 22 kW chargers on the market, but their construction is not optimal in terms of network load.
Thanks to the built-in safety electronics of wall chargers, safety problems can be prevented if it is installed by an expert in accordance with the standards.
What kind of charging cable do I need for my electric car?
There are two different types of electric car charging cables:
-
Type1 - Type2
-
Type2 - Type2.
This means that there is a Type 1 or Type 2 connector on the side of the car, depending on the model of car. The chargers are always using the Type 2 connector in accordance with European standards.
You can check the connector type of your car in the manufacturer's documentation, on the manufacturer's website,
or on the electric vehicle database page: after selecting the model under the Charging menu item, under the name Charge Port.
How should I choose a home electric car wall charger?
When choosing a home electric car charger, important aspects must be taken into account in order to install the most suitable charging equipment.
The following factors should be considered:
Charging power and speed
The chargers can charge the car at different speeds based on the power.
Fast chargers (DC chargers) deliver a larger amount of energy in a short time and can charge the battery in up to 30 minutes.
However, in the case of charging at home, such fast charging is not necessary, as the car has plenty of time to charge, for example at night. AC chargers provide slower charging and are available in 3.6 kW, 7.4 kW, 11 kW and 22 kW chargers.
Capacity available in the house
Family houses usually have 3*16 or 1*32 Ampere. It is worth assessing what other equipment is connected to the network, for example a heat pump or sauna, and whether there is a solar power supply.
How do I know how many phases are connected in my house?
This can be checked in two ways:
-
Look at the meter type on the electricity bill: it will say "1F" for one phase, "3F" for three phases
-
Look at the meter: there should be as many fuses (with rectangular rocker switches) as there are phases.
Compatibility
First, it is necessary to check that the connector of the charger is compatible with your charging cable , or in the case of a fixed cable charger, the charger cable with the charging port of your car .
Different car manufacturers and models may have different charging connectors, so it is always worth checking the compatibility of the car charger and the cable.
You can do this on the electric vehicle database page: after selecting the model under the Charging menu item, under the name Charge Port .
In addition, it is worth checking the compatibility between the charger performance and the car's energy absorption capacity.
Certain cars (such as the Tesla Model 3) can only take 32 amps per phase, so an 11 kW charger is the right choice. It would be useless to have a 22 kW charger if the car would only charge with 11 kWh.
How do I know what power my car can absorb and in how many phases?
This can be checked in two ways:
-
In the description received from the manufacturer or on the manufacturer's website
-
The electric vehicle database page: after selecting the model, you will find it under the Charging menu under the name Charge Power.
Required functions
Some chargers have smart features that allow you to, for example, schedule charging, control energy consumption and other personalised settings. It is worth considering what features are needed for home charging.
If the house has little capacity for car charging, it is recommended to choose a smart charger that monitors the power consumption of the system and adjusts the charging accordingly. At 1*32 Amps, for example, it makes sense to use a smart charger for charging, as the car would use at least 7.4 kW of the available 11 kW (1*32A) for charging.
How do I know that the home electric car charger can be retrofitted in my house?
The feasibility retrofitting a home electric car charger in a house depend on the available electric capacity in the house and on the state of the electrical network it relies on.
An expert company can determine these factors during an on-site survey and tell you whether a home electric car charger can be retrofitted.
If you get a quote from an expert company for the installation, you can be sure that charging is feasible.
What type of electricity is required to charge an electric car at home?
AC charging is recommended for charging the electric car at home. Houses and buildings usually have AC power.
In contrast, the electricity supplied by batteries is direct current.
Therefore, AC chargers usually convert household alternating current into a form that can be accepted by an electric car battery.
Most electric cars can charge at 7.4 kW or 11 kW, and plug-in hybrids at 3.6 kW.
Accordingly, 3*16 or 1*32 amperes are required to charge an electric car at home.
What is the monthly cost of charging an electric car at home?
The monthly cost of charging an electric car at home costs between HUF 13,125 and HUF 21,875. The monthly cost depends on the price of electricity and the kilometers traveled .
Price of electricity
In case of charging at home, the car owner receives the energy at cost price. This means a reduced utility price of HUF 36-40 up to 2,523 kWh/year consumption. At a consumption higher than this, the price of charging an electric car will be 70 HUF/kWh.
If someone also charges their electric car from their own network, they will probably exceed this limit, so it is worth considering the higher tariff.
Average mileage per month
An electric car covers an average of 50 km per day in city traffic.
Calculated at 30 days per month, this is 1,500 km.
An average electric car consumes 15 kW per 100 km.
On a monthly basis, this means a consumption of 225 kW.
Monthly electric car charging price
Based on the above, the monthly cost of charging an electric car (calculated with an average consumption of 225 kW) is HUF 9,000 at a reduced utility price, and HUF 15,750 at a price of HUF 70/kW.
In addition to the higher tariff, the electricity bill will be HUF 15,750 higher per month .
This means covering 18,000 km per year.
Based on kilometers traveled, the following monthly costs can be calculated at a price of HUF 70/kW:
Megtett km/év | Megtett km/hó | Felhasznált kW/hó | Felhasznált kW ára/hó |
---|---|---|---|
5000 | 417 | 62.5 | 4375 Ft |
10000 | 833 | 125 | 8750 Ft |
15000 | 1250 | 187.5 | 13125 Ft |
18000 | 1500 | 225 | 15750 Ft |
20000 | 1667 | 250 | 17500 Ft |
25000 | 2083 | 312.5 | 21875 Ft |
30000 | 2500 | 375 | 26250 Ft |
35000 | 2917 | 437.5 | 30625 Ft |

Frequently Asked Questions
When should I change the cable?
If the cable is visibly damaged, for example with torn or damaged insulation, it requires immediate replacement.
A damaged cable can not only reduce efficiency, but also poses a risk of short circuiting or catching on fire. If you experience system errors such as frequent power outages, discharges, or other electrical issues, the cable may be the source of the problem. In this case, a professional can inspect and evaluate the cables and decide if they need to be replaced.
The life of electrical cables can decrease over time, especially if environmental conditions are harsh, such as high temperatures or humidity.
How can I get a new charging cable?
Once you know the type and power required by your car, find the appropriate manufacturer or dealer that sells that type of cable.
This can be the vehicle manufacturer's authorized service center, an auto parts dealer, or a dealer selling special electric car charging cables.
In many cases, you can buy such cables online. You can order a cable through the official website of your car manufacturer or other trusted online retailers.
